After the recent Zimbabwe Fashion Week, I got a chance to look at some of the pictures since I could not attend in person. There were quite a lot of designers that captured my attention and one of them was Znzorzi Adby, who won the award for the Emerging Designer of the year. I decided to obviously do a bit of digging since I was not aware of who he was (yes, it is true…I have been living under a rock).
I asked a friend and upcoming designer Rue Tendos Mukori if she was aware of Znzorzi…just to cut a long story short, my girl Rue hooked me up so that I could get an exclusive interview for you guys Here it is.
Tess : Hey there Znzorzi
Znzorzi : Hello
Tess :My name is Tessa ( You can call me Tess) from Royal Fashion Files blog, I was wondering if I could steal a couple of minutes of yours for a short interview.
Znzorzi : Sure thing. Ask away.
Tess : Firstly, I want to know…who is Znzorzi Abdy.
Znzorzi : I was born Tinashe Adby Phiri, currently a student at CUT (Chinhoyi University of Technology) in my final year and I am 23years old.
Tess : Mmmm, now I can’t help but wonder, how did name Znzorzi Abdy come about?
Znzorzi : After discovering my love for fashion I took fashion as my 2nd religion and with that rebirth came the name Znzorzi. Before you ask Znzorzi is not a word from any language but in my fashion dictionary (self-written), it means Style.
Tess : I like, so we can safely say, Fashion is your religion.
Znzorzi : Ofcourse
Tess : That is great. So I know there is a lot of things I do not know about you but do tell me one thing anyone can never guess when they look at you.
Znzorzi : Umm, let me see…would you have guessed that before I got into fashion I used to be a Chemical Engineering student?
Tess : Wow, no, I really wouldn’t have guessed. Tell me more.
Znzorzi : Well, after excelling in my studies in high school I got an opportunity to go and study in South Africa. I studied chemical engineering for a year after which I realised it was not my calling. I was doing very well but it wasn’t my passion so I packed my bags, came back home and enrolled at CUT to study my passion, designing.
Tess : What a change man!! I know this might be personal but how did your family and friends take it?
Znzorzi : They were very supportive of my decision and also some relatives really wanted to know what this whole fashion thing was about so I wil made them sit and watch Fashion TV all day. But some of them never understood why skinny girls kept walking up and down lol
Tess : Haha I can only imagine.
Tess : Znzorzi, you did mention that you are in your final year of study which means that last year you were on attachment. Where were you attached and how was the experience?
Znzorzi: In the past year I got a rare opportunity when I was one of the two fashion students selected from Southern Africa personally by renowned South African designer,David Tlale to intern at his Haute Couture fashion house in Joburg. At David Tlale I learnt a lot from the importance of iconography to conceptualising fashion collections.More so ,I met people that I admired from Iconic singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka to President Jacob Zuma’s Wives. It was an extraordinary moment for me and a year later I look back and I’m lost for words
Tess: Your opportunity sounds only like a dream come true
Znzorzi: It was. Mr Tlale is a trailblazer when it comes to African Fashion and he is not a cliche designer. So going under his wing was an awesome experience.
Tess: Tell me how did you land such an opportunity (just to help inspire young designers who would like the same)
Znzorzi: All it took was my fashion portfolio, the love of God and a whole lot of faith.
Tess: I love that you do acknowledge God.
Tess: And that you brought back the knowledge you gained from S.A back to the Zim fashion industry
Znzorzi: Oh thank u,I’m a true believer that if we are going to outdo ourselves as human beings we have to believe in the presence of God.
Znzorzi: I am armed with a lot of knowledge ,and I have given myself the task to put Zimbabwe on the fashion map. Zimbabwe has a lot of potential .
Tess: Speaking of Zim Fashion, I recently saw the pics of your collection at Zim Fashion Week. I loved the designs, the purple colour, the floral pirnt and the overall elegance.
Znzorzi: The collection was called a true Zimbabwean Story,it was inspired by the aubergine hence the use of the Korean Duchess that was fine textured and very smooth to the skin.it also gave reference to cutting edge glamour .My designs are generally a promise of tomorrow and a celebration of today
Tess: I certainly love your designs already
Tess: Just something I might have overlooked, when did you launch your label?
Znzorzi: The official launch is taking place in some few coming weeks and it’s going to be at a discreet venue and it’s going to be an invite only.High Profile people will be present and the guest list is still under construction.
Tess: An exclusive event, I like.
Znzorzi: Well Put
Tess: Just to round up, what advice would you give to youth who want to get into designing?
Znzorzi: I would say they need only three :things love ,hope and faith and everything will fall into place.
Tess: Znzorzi, thank you so much for your time and responses
Znzrzi: Thank u very much, after the interview we can definitely arrange something cutting edge for you.It will be an absolute honor.
Tess: I can’t wait to get a chance to wear your designs. Hope to see more of your designs on runways, magazines and on celebrities.
I doubt you would need any further convincing for you to love Znzorzi Adby and I can’t wait to wear one of his designs, hopefully his launch is not until November.
Do comment and tell me what you think of Znzorzi Adby’s designs.
