Award-winning performance poet Linda Gabriel has been selected for six-week artist-in-residency at AfricAvenir in Berlin, Germany.
Gabriel’s residency, at the Berlin-based non-governmental and non-profit organisation that promotes political and cultural education from an African perspective, will run from February 1 to March 12.
The talented performance poet told the Daily News that she was delighted to be invited by again by AfricAvenir.
“I worked with them in 2014 so they decided to create another opportunity for me. I am excited and humbled because this shows that AfricAvenir is acknowledging my work.
“It also means that my work deserves that because if it was not good enough they would not invite me for the second time,” said Gabriel.
She added that AfricAvenir has lined up a tour of universities in Germany that will see her perform her one-woman show called “You Think You Know me.”
According to the invitation letter sent by AfricAvenir, the Berlin-based organisation will, among other things, organise the launch of Gabriel’s book being published by German publisher, organise performances outside Berlin at venues to be confirmed, organise a workshop with other African artists who are based in Berlin as well as readings and recitals at a planned Black History month event.
Gabriel was, however, quick to point out that the trip Berlin has been made possible by the intervention of the Culture Fund.
“I am really grateful to them because they paid for my air ticket and my travel insurance. AfricAvenir will cover my l transport in Berlin and other living expenses,” she said.
The pending trip to Berlin is a fitting reward for the poet who performs at Maestro Lounge in Harare every Tuesday.
