The introduction of Econet Wireless’s ConnectedCar technology has seen a dramatic decline in car theft in the country.
Introduced a few months ago, Econet ConnectedCar is a global phenomenon used by organisations to monitor, control and better optimise their fleet management. The technology can also be used to track stolen vehicles.
We caught up with taxi driver Tichaona Kadzviti whose vehicle, a Toyota Raum, was stolen on August 7, 2015 at around 10.30pm and he was able to recover it less than 12 hours later.
Kadzviti was hired by three men to ferry them to a certain house in the Strathaven area of Harare. Upon arrival the “passengers” produced a pistol which they aimed at the driver. They then proceeded to assault him before instructing him to run as they sped off with the vehicle.
Fortunately the driver managed to alert his boss who was actually at his home in Hatfield. Since this Toyota was on Econet ConnectedCar vehicle tracking he managed to immediately locate and start monitoring tit from his mobile phone.
