HARARE, Zimbabwe – Bad news for travellers heading to Beitbridge this week – the management on the Zimbabwe side of the border post has warned there’ll be major maintenance on the bridge. Public holidays are among the busiest times of the year at Beitbridge, which handles more than 40,000 vehicles a day.
The New Limpopo Bridge company says work is expected to start tomorrow and it will last until 13 May. One lane of the bridge will be closed from 7 am to 6 pm though both lanes will be open at night. The company says this is major maintenance work and though it doesn’t warn of delays, they do appear inevitable. Beitbridge border post is the busiest in the sub-Saharan region and immigration authorities are already stepping up checks on cars and busses for illegal Zimbabwean migrants, especially children who tend to travel during the school holidays.
